Marvel Comic Con in 1975 was the very first convention hosted by the Marvel Comics Group itself- and Sam Maronie was there! Here's a few minutes with his eyewitness account, including his meeting with Jack Kirby. Sam shot most of the existing high quality photos from the event that you still see today- and continues photographing comics convention the nation over. Sam's also produced a book: Tripping Through Pop Culture: The (Mis) Adventures of a Pop Culture writer, with a cover by the acclaimed Joe Phillips! Here are some of my favorite cover images from the series: This one, in particular, is the first one I remember, appearing in Mighty Marvel Checklist of my copy of Marvel Tales #66, 1976, one of my first comics, bought as a surprise at a surplus store by my parents---one of their very few gifts of comics, but all the ones in my kids year were pivotal! Despite their great showdown, Harker's not on the cover of TOD #70 below. Truthfully, cool as this is for showing them in battle and Dracula using his powers, the one; (#32) where Harker's crawling away just barely out of reach of the flying Dracula is just tight, tight, TIGHT! Finally, it looks like the eventual conclusion to the Domini storyline had some pretty cool execution, though Wolfman had to know the end of the series drew upon the horizon by this point. How Does one publish a completely original graphic novel these days? I'm going to share this for several reasons: 1) It's instructive as to how independent publishing attains resources. 2) It's based on an idea that feels socially relevant and contains possibilities of surprise and characterization that transcend product-driven comics. 3) Roger's worked hard on this and he asked me to consider it personally, along with some funny stories about communist black-listed DEFENDERS stories and meeting RUSH.
