While we usually do naturalistic comic book art and portraits, we were more than happy to break out caricature and cartoons for Jovita's Graduation Party! It was great, kicking off summertime in a great atmosphere, dazzling the cheerful crowd with our humble talents. I started adjusting, to deal with the overall page proportions. I actually worked on the last panel last. This process of darkening parts of the figure---to give the figure or object density---is referred to as "spotting blacks." It's the inker's job to fill these areas completely. Here's about twenty minutes devoted to laying out page two of our spread: So you can see it's on there rather lightly. I have some coming up, though the characters go inside a huge structure of unusual design I want it to be "right" though the figures have silly faces. So really, I would look up "perspective" online. To do tall buildings, you emphasize what is furthest away as smaller. You can also do rooftops, which from above would each be evenly spaced squares. The master of drawing superhero action on rooftops is Steve Ditko. First, I read a friend's idea. I started laying out the figures. Here are the pencils: Next, I started using marker to get bold outlines. I experimented with a bit of white-out. I had the perfect dagger teeth in ol' Devil Dinosaur there then screwed them up trying to "spot blacks" between them in the mouth. I came back with white out and the marker and gradually restored them best I could. I replaced some of my "scratchy" lines for cross=hatching with darker, bolder lines, as my friend Marcus suggested. I spotted more blacks (the fills that provide figure density) and finished up. I'm still open to changes, though. The dinosaur is completely an homage to Jack Kirby! Here I photographed with a bit of warm light on the Spectre. For him, I used no reference save myself, and for Galactus, I referred to Ron Lim's version for details, which is pretty faithful to Kirby.
