Intelligent Designs: Superman Quits America and I Quit Superman

Integr8d Fictions is often a collaborative process, or is highlighted by collaboration or direct inspiration. This is a little different. I'm bringing you a guest blog, because he so thoughtfully considers a few things you'd have to ask if you were still reading new comic books. (I have about zero so far from the year 2011, but hey, I am working on my own, that's something to me.) So here is Keith Howell's take on Superman's latest dilemma, which makes him none too happy: how can Superman renounce his U.S. citizenship---and why would anyone make that story as anything other than a "What if...?" lue Intelligent Designs: Superman Quits America and I Quit Superman : "I've been wondering for awhile what would be my breaking point. Superman renouncing his American citizenship is it. I didn't know until ..." The Tuscaloosa Charity Auctions on EBay are almost set to begin. Anyone who'd like to take part in donating auction items, ...

One more Seventies summer post

First I wanna say Savage Dragon creator Erik Larsen, who wrote a later revival of NOVA, has been reading along! Pretty cool. Not ready for Nova Prime Time Players When this issue hit the stands, the general American public’s ideas of super heroes most likely came from campy sources, as BATMAN and WONDER WOMAN were the two most successful adaptation of super heroes in a decade. The popular culture has seen THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN since 1974, and other than WONDER WOMAN, that’s about it when you think about it. Saturday morning cartoons and comic books were seen as about on the same level by most of the public, despite the deeper characterizations and more mature themes that had crept in since the Silver Age. STAR WARS is coming, bringing less costumed-seeming super-heroes, or rather, bringing a super villain and mostly a motley crew playing hero in super circumstances, with powers, yes, which they're only beginning to grasp. SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE is still a year away, ...

I finally get you

Nova, I finally get you. This morning it becomes an epiphany, dawning like a warm shower on the sense. NOVA is written as it is so that little kids, too, can enjoy it. Truthfully, many ex-fans cluster here to talk of many things. Or make that, ex-buyers...of comic books, at least. Some of the more popular product amongst people who overlap that crowd are the kid-friendly comics, which seem to have versions of the characters that evoke their sense of wonder and fun. Now, it’s true, by the time Shooter has Pym losing his marbles, it’s evidence that the path to redemption played over and over again went now into a darkness found in adult life, though these things affect many of the young readers, too. But it’s heavy. What Alan (Watchmen) Moore grasped was an alternative, which to this post-modernist genius of deconstruction became clear as A-B-C Comics in the decade after his revolutionary masterpiece of the medium. His efforts at straight-up super heroes convinced some more than ot...

vanishing wave part six

Sue Storm Richards, a.k.a. the Invisible Woman. If I was really sure what I am looking for, passing sweeps with my visibility power might actually tell us something about where everyone who disappears is...there are spectra beyond the visible, but when the phenomena is as close as your incomplete neighbor, maybe the answer to their disappearance has to do with migration into some otherwise unseen form, as though the waves have an extra dimensional mass that serves as its interface...can I make something visible from another dimension that is present invisibly? Reed, I’m topside, about fifty yards from Johnny. He’s darkened, earthy, like he’s spoiling! And he’s about to burn some kid with a pillar of fire...it’s already a wildfire, I’m containing it now---do me a favor? (via suit communicator) Yes? Help me think of how I might make an extra-dimensional mass visible, and we might understand the vanishing wave’s interface. There do seem to be extra-dimensional localities at work here; ex...
